International Kendo Federation (FIK)

Founded in 1970, the FIK promotes kendo, iaido, and jodo worldwide. It organizes the World Kendo Championships, publishes international competition rules, and coordinates dan examinations across member nations. Continental bodies such as the Asia-Oceania Kendo Federation (AOKF) support regional exchange. The FIK endorses the AJKF 1975 definition of kendo as the global standard.

All Japan Kendo Federation (AJKF)

The AJKF (全日本剣道連盟 / ZNKR), established in 1952, is the FIK founding member and authoritative body for kendo in Japan. It administers dan and kyu examinations, publishes official kata and technique standards, trains referees, and represents kendo in Japanese cultural and educational policy. Federations worldwide model grading and competition rules on AJKF practice.

Hong Kong & Greater China

The Kendo Association of Hong Kong, China has been a full FIK member since 1975. It organises local dan examinations, the Hong Kong Asian Open, and the Greater China Cup. The Republic of China Kendo Association is the FIK member for Chinese Taipei and runs Taiwan’s student nationals, grading, and World Championship team — see Kendo in Taiwan. Macau holds special membership; mainland China participates as an associate through the China Kendo Organizations Union (CKOU). Official contacts are in the directory below.

National Federations & Local Dojo

Each established kendo country maintains a national federation affiliated with the FIK at full, special, or associate status. These bodies organize tournaments, certify instructors and referees, and adapt international standards locally. Individual dojo affiliate with national or regional bodies — in Hong Kong, through HKKA member clubs listed on the beginner entry page. University clubs in Japan, Korea, and overseas form a vital pipeline for young practitioners.
